Art Project Depot - 5 questions - Kiril Cholakov
What are the most essential components of your artistic practice?

The human-nature interface, the way it functions and the consequences, for example the climate changes of the last two centuries. The phenotype and phenotypic plasticity not only from a biological point of view, but mostly transferred and studied in a social perspective. Nostalgia as a phenotypic plasticity of memory, personal and collective. The poetics of constructed image and atmosphere.

How do you interact with space when creating a project?

Inclusive - the visitor enters and is included in an atmosphere and environment created by me. This is how I would describe the way I work with space in the majority of my projects. The fact that I graduated in mural painting ( in the golden age of the art academy in Sofia) helps me a lot in my work.

What is the role of text in developing images?

I use text much more on an energetic level than as a narrative. The emotion it evokes that accompanies me in creating the atmosphere of a work. A building material in the visualization of images that I use in the way that in ancient times the builders would embed the shadows of chosen people into the foundations of a bridge, church or home that would make them sustainable as an aesthetic and durable over time.

What reaction do you attempt to provoke in your audience through your work?

Meeting. Conversation. Empathy. Emotion.

What is the role of the research approach in contemporary art?

A question that would be much better answered by professionals dealing with anthropology, philosophy, art historians and curators of contemporary art. For me, the research approach is the basis of 90% of my projects.
